Reviews, interviews, and articles on jazz, folk, classical and other music from Aotearoa/New Zealand

Welcome to Joyful Noise: Deep Dives Into Music From Aotearoa/New Zealand. This newsletter is going to be about the music I like, but isn’t covered by either mainstream or music media in New Zealand and will be entirely focused on music made in Aotearoa/New Zealand and/or by New Zealanders. Deep dives also implies long form writing and you are correct! Most of the reviews I’ve done have had to be short for a variety of reasons, and breaking into mainstream media where I might be able to write 500 or 1000 words on an album or concert is hard! So I decided to strike out on my own and write about the music that just doesn’t get written about much in the New Zealand media.

A bit about me, I’m a freelance jazz historian and music lecturer, and my focus is on the history of jazz in New Zealand. I’m a recipient of the Ministry of Culture and Heritage New Zealand History Research Trust Fund award (2018), the 2017 Douglas Lilburn Research Fellow, and the 2016 Sir George Grey Researcher in Residence. If you’re interested in jazz history, you can find my work at and on my blog I’m also active on Twitter as @nzjazzhistory.
